The Sweet Treat Bakery app aims to provide an easy, convenient way for Bay Area residents to order baked goods directly from the bakery, bypassing third-party apps. This app focuses on simplifying ordering for pick-up and delivery, catering to busy individuals and families who value time-saving solutions.

Opportunity

Sweet Treat Bakery was a project I undertook as part of my Google UX Design class. The goal was to enhance the digital experience for a local bakery by creating an intuitive and efficient app for customers.

The app was designed to simplify the ordering process, making it easy for users to browse, select, and pay for their favorite baked goods directly from the bakery. Through this project, I aimed to address pain points like the extra costs associated with third-party apps and limited ordering options, while providing a more streamlined, user-friendly solution.

Research Process

Desk Research

Analyzed competitor apps and general industry trends to understand popular features and usability.

User Surveys

Conducted a remote survey with 12 users, focusing on understanding preferences for fast ordering, health options, and essential app features for a bakery experience.

A college student looking for affordable bakery goods with easy pick-up and delivery options between study breaks.

A busy mom seeking a way to order her favorite baked goods for pick-up or delivery quickly.


User Journey

Created journey maps to identify pain points in traditional bakery app navigation and highlight the need for seamless ordering, digital wallet integration, and accessible options for busy schedules.

Ideation and Solution Development

Developing a Solution

Focused on designing an app that enables fast ordering and offers health-conscious options. Brainstormed features such as gluten-free options, digital wallet integration, and direct ordering to reduce costs.

Moodboard

Created a mood board to define Sweet Treat Bakery’s visual identity, including a custom-designed logo along with thoughtfully selected colors and typography. Each element was crafted to evoke the bakery’s warm, inviting feel while catering to the needs of modern, on-the-go users.

Low-Fidelity

Drafted initial wireframes to structure the app layout and test basic navigation.

Established a cohesive style guide for color schemes, typography, and iconography, ensuring a consistent brand experience throughout the app.

Major Improvements and Design Decisions Improvements

Simplified the navigation structure based on feedback, ensuring quick access to pick-up and delivery options. Removed unnecessary steps to streamline the user journey.

Navigating Checkout

Prior to conducting the usability study, I created mock-ups featuring pick-up and delivery options.

However, during testing, it became evident that these options were non-functional, and the absence of visual aids, such as photos, posed challenges for users in navigating the interface.

Improving the Menu

Before the usability study, the interface displayed a selection of goods, which unfortunately did not function as intended.

Following the usabilitystudy, it became evident that the functionality needed to be addressed, and the addition of corresponding photos and icons was essential to enhance user navigation.

Adding Items

Before the usability study, the app functioned adequately but felt incomplete without item photos, which left users uncertain. The selection process also lacked clarity, making it hard to tell when an item had been chosen.

Following the study, I added item photos, clarified the selection indicator, and introduced a fun animation where items move into a box or bag when added to the cart. These small updates made the app more engaging and intuitive for users.

Design Decisions

Opted for a clean, minimalistic design to reduce visual clutter and prioritize functionality, using a calming color palette that reflects the bakery’s brand and appeals to the target audience.

Final Outcome and Reflection

Final Product

The Sweet Treat Bakery app prototype showcases a fast and user-friendly ordering experience tailored to high-tech families and busy professionals.

Reflection

This project underscored the importance of user-centered design, especially for time-saving solutions in a competitive market. Insights from user research allowed for targeted improvements, particularly in navigation and ordering efficiency.
